Reason number 1: Rohit & Virat are back in action

The return of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to the ODI squad is the main reason for Indian fans to watch the series.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return to One-Day Internationals for the first time since the England tour. The pair will reunite with Shikhar Dhawan to form India’s omnipresent Top 3 in One-Day Internationals. Rohit and Virat haven’t bowled much recently in the 50-over format. However, with the World Cup on the horizon, the duo would be fighting to clear the air.

Rohit Sharma, who is out of form, does not have the best record in Bangladesh. This will most likely be his final trip to Bangladesh, and he hopes to end his century drought there.

Reason number 2: India prepares for the 2023 World Cup

The ODI series against Bangladesh is Team India’s last in 2022. The one against the Bangla Tigers is seen as a stepping stone towards the 2023 ODI World Cup, which will be held in India. The Blues, being the hosts, will be under a lot of pressure to win the tournament. However, skipper Rohit Sharma, during his press conference earlier in the day, said that he was expecting an exciting series against Bangladesh.

He also added that the current team management has more or less a fair idea about the core of the national cricket team that will play in the World Cup next year.

After the Bangladesh series, India plays Sri Lanka, New Zealand, the West Indies, and Australia next year before going into the ODI World Cup. With less than a year to go, the preparations for the World Cup well and truly begin on Sunday.

Rishabh Pant will be under tremendous pressure going into the series against Bangladesh.

Reason number 3: Do-or-Die series for Rishabh Pant

The middle order for India, just like its top order, is a worry going into the series. None bigger than Rishabh Pant. The southpaw’s struggle has been imminent of late. He was first included in the playing XI and later defended by stand-in-captain Shikhar Dhawan after failure against New Zealand ODIs.

Whether the team management likes it or not, Rishabh Pant’s form is a worry. At the same time, there is a belief in the team set up, that he will come good, and it’s a matter of just one innings. Pant is on borrowed time, and his lease might end if he fails against Bangladesh. Players like Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson are waiting in the wings to replace him. It’s now or never time for Pant.

Reason number 4: Identifying quality over quantity

Be it batsmen or bowlers, India needs to identify backups in both departments as they prepare for the ODI World Cup next year. With too many opportunities given to both batters and bowlers, at times to the ones, who do not make it to the ICC event, is a cause of concern for the die-hard cricket fans.

Players like Shreyas Iyer, Md. Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Umran Malik, Washington Sundar, and Deepak Chahar would be closely watched by the national selectors. A string of performances can force the selectors to give them the nod over the seniors. Maybe it is high time that the selectors identify quality over quantity and give regular chances to players who deserve them, rather than treating them as travellers on a tour.

Reason number 5: Bangladesh eye maiden ODI series win over since 2015

To set the record straight, Bangladesh has defeated India just once in a bilateral series on their home soil. That was way back in 2015, when India lost the series 2-1 to Bangladesh, aka the Mustafizur Rahman series. In fact, this is the first time since 2015 that India is traveling to Bangladesh for a bilateral series.

Bangladesh will be hoping for a repeat performance, while India will be looking to avenge their defeat seven years ago.
