BCCI is set for another windfall of cash. The Indian board has set Rs 400 crore base price for each WIPL team. But it expects no less than Rs 1000 Cr per team. That will take BCCI’s coffers to a minimum of Rs 5000 Cr.

The base price for WIPL teams is set as per Men’s IPL franchises back in 2008. BCCI had set close $100 million (as per the exchange rate in 2008). The new franchises will pay the fees in equal installments over 5 years.

In October, the BCCI approved a five-team WIPL at the AGM. The board also finalised a 22-match format for the tournament. Existing men’s IPL franchises too have shown interest in acquiring the franchises. However, till now the stakeholders are undecided on how to distribute the franchises.

WIPL 2023: Format and Schedule

The tournament is likely to begin in the second week of March in 2023 and conclude around March 23. Instead of home and away system, the WIPL will move in a caravan style with two or more cities hosting matches.

The tournament will be played over two weeks with 22 matches. The WIPL will follow the league and playoff format with the top team qualifying directly for the final. 2nd and 3rd placed teams will play the eliminator. The team’s owners are set to be finalised by December.
