IND vs NZ: Shikhar Dhawan Form: 2023 World Cup – India stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan squandered yet another golden opportunity to cement his place for the 2023 World Cup. The southpaw got out for 28 runs off 45 balls in the ongoing third ODI against New Zealand. With only 20 ODIs left before the 50-over World Cup, Dhawan’s spot is under the scanner. Worst, with Rohit Sharma already fixed as one opener, and Shubman Gill’s stature rising in the ODI format, Dhawan may lose his spot if he fails to perform in the upcoming ODI matches. Ind vs NZ: Shikhar Dhawan falters yet again, Is Dhawan’s spot in the 2023 WC under the scanner? Is Gabbar’s career over? Check Details
IND vs NZ: Pressure building up on Shikhar Dhawan’s slow strike rate becoming a cause of concern – 79, 29, 61, 10, 31*, 9, 1, 97, 13, 58, 81*, 33, 40, 4, 13, 8, 72, 3, & 28 are the scores Dhawan has registered in the 19 ODIs he has played in 2022. The southpaw has failed to score a century in this period and is scoring runs at a dismal-looking strike rate of 80. While he scored 72 in the first ODI against New Zealand, the southpaw looked far from his fluent best.
In the three ODIs against New Zealand, the opener finished with 103 runs at an average of 34. His strike rate of 78.03 is the worst for the top five run scorers in the ODI series. It is his way of scoring runs that has become a big issue. With India adopting an aggressive brand of playing cricket, the veteran may not be fit for the 50-over World Cup.
IND vs NZ: Why is Dhawan’s spot in the 2023 WC under the scanner?
- Dhawan has failed to play aggressively in the power play. With England & Australia playing fearlessly at the top, India too is aiming for the same.
- Rohit Sharma is a fixed opener because he is the captain of the ODI side, as well due to his colossal record in the ODI format.
- India captain’s strike is also 88, and that is exactly what the team wants. With Shubman Gill scoring over 600 runs in 15 ODIs at a strike rate of 99, the team may look at him in World Cup 2023.
- All is though not lost for Dhawan, as he has got 20 ODIs to prove his worth.
- But with a new selection committee panel coming, the southpaw’s ODI spot may come under the scanner owing to his dismal form.
