Agarwal could not take PBKS to playoffs even when the team was stacked with quality players like Jonny Bairstow, Dhawan, Rabada, Livingstone, and Odean Smith. This was the seventh straight season where PBKS could not make the playoffs. Naturally, the owners and management wanted a change in leadership, and they placed the bet on Dhawan. The southpaw knew that PBKS might give the leadership to him due to his experience of captaining an international side.

“Our last season [2022] did not go as well as we would have liked. I knew there was a possibility [of getting the captaincy]. So I thought I will take the opportunity and bring the best energy to the table and take things forward and make an impact,” Dhawan said to ESPN.
IND vs NZ: Dhawan says creating a good environment a key in the PBKS team, says will take a leaf from his India captaincy stint
· Dhawan has captained the Indian ODI team for three to four series. The opening batter has a huge success winning majority of them.
· The southpaw wants to emulate the same in PBKS and says creating a good environment is key.
· The 36-year-old also further opined that being cool and composed has always helped him get the best out of the boys.
· Dhawan believes his biggest strength is his presence of mind and decision-making. The southpaw says he is confident in helping PBKS do well in IPL 2023 season.
· The opening batter has prior IPL experience of leadership as he led Sunriseres Hyderabad in the 2014 season.
“I was only captain for half a season for Sunrisers. The difference now is that it’s a new beginning. In the Indian team, I have been captain for three to four series, so there is a sort of brotherhood now. Everyone knows how things go on, and what to do, so there is a comfort level. I want to do the same at Punjab Kings so that we reach that comfort level as soon as we can.
It always starts at the top. I already have a good bond with the boys. I am very, very positive that it will be an amazing journey,” Dhawan added.
