How has Moeen Ali shot down Virat Kohli?
A very good player of off-spin, Virat Kohli is difficult to bowl at. In fact, he has an average of over 80 against off-spin in T20Is. Even Ravichandran Ashwin finds it difficult to get him out in IPL and in India nets. However, Moeen Ali has managed to break Kohli’s rhythm numerous times. But how? Let’s check.

In Tests, it’s difficult to break through Kohli’s gate by an off-spinner, who doesn’t really bowl regularly. But in Chennai Test last year, Ali delivered one loopy off-break. It turned in and bamboozled Kohli. The former India captain could not believe he got beaten by Moeen.

On both occasions, Moeen Ali’s idea was clear on how to get Kohli out. Both Chennai and Pune pitches were slow, assisting slow spinners a great deal of help. Kohli had tried to tackle with his cover drives. But it did not work both times.
Having played with Kohli at Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL, Moeen Ali has closely observed him bat at the nets. He has even seen him bat up close in matches. Hence, he knows his strengths and weaknesses first hand.
“It depends on how he’s batting at the time, his own confidence. Batting-wise, he’s batting really well. I think since the Asia Cup, I feel like he’s back to his best. He looks like he’s found his mojo again and that happens to every player over their careers,” Moeen Ali said.
