Ashwin’s spot absolutely certain for the Semi-Final clash

Team India management will not dare to omit Ashwin from the all-important clash against England. The senior pro had a good outing in the last group-stage match against Zimbabwe. The off-spinner took three wickets for his side and gave away just 22 runs in his four-over quota.

The Indian team management will also be keen to keep Ashwin in the squad because of his good record against left-handed batters. Ashwin has an economy rate of 6.10 against left-handed batters as compared to 8.36 against right-handed batters. Despite Dawid Malan getting ruled out from the match, England have three left-handed batters in their team including Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, and Sam Curran.

Axar or Chahal? Who is a better pick

Stats in 2022 Mat Overs Mdns Wkts BBI Avg Econ SR
Yuzvendra Chahal 19 62.3 0 21 3/20 22.61 7.6 17.8
Axar Patel 21 57.1 1 21 3/15 22.38 8.22 16.3
  • Axar Patel has missed only one game against South Africa, while Yuzvendra Chahal has not got any games so far.
  • Axar has not been at his best in the tournament so far.
  • He gave away 40 runs from 3.2 overs against Zimbabwe in the last game.
  • Axar also leaked 21 runs against Pakistan in his solitary over. However, he did have a good outing against the Netherlands.
  • Axar Patel has played 21 T20I matches this year and took the same amount of wickets.
  • Meanwhile, Chahal has played 19 T20I matches this year and has scalped 21 wickets.
  • Axar holds an advantage over Chahal when it comes to batting as he hit some lusty blows towards the ending phase.
  • He has a strike rate of 132.5 with the bat in T20Is

One of the other key aspects of having Ashwin on the team is because of his batting. The right-handed batter kept his calm against Pakistan during the ending phase of the match and hit the winning runs against the Men in Green. Later in the tournament, Ashwin scored vital 13 runs against Bangladesh which turned out to be very crucial as India won that game by just five runs.
