IND vs ENG: Kohli looks to get the better of Rashid, while Buttler aims to survive against power play specialist Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Insidesport

It is no secret that leg spinner Adil Rashid has gotten the better of Kohli on most occasions in the last two years. Across formats, the English spinner has bossed this battle. This time, with Kohli in scintillating form, he would like to win this mini battle. Meanwhile, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has troubled England captain Jos Buttler with his incoming delivery. He has dismissed the English opening batter inside the power play and given India an edge early in the innings.

Here at InsideSport, we decode why these three-player battles could prove to be pivotal in the second semi-final between India vs England

Insidesport

1. Jos Buttler vs Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar has dismissed Jos Buttler a humongous five times in the T20Is. India’s power play specialist has outfoxed the English opener with innocuous inswinging delivery in the first six overs in T20Is. Only Dushmantha Chameera has dismissed Rohit Sharma more in T20Is – six times. Bhuvneshwar has a chance to go equal with the Sri Lankan pacer in the semi-final match in Adelaide.

Buttler has a history with the incoming ball. Over the years, bowlers have dismissed him in the power play with inswing. Bhuvneshwar is the best exponent of swing in the Indian team. If the India pacer gets the better of England’s captain in the semi-final, then India can harbor hopes of restricting England to bwlow 180.

2. Virat Kohli vs Adil Rashid

Only Moeen Ali has dismissed Kohli more than Adil Rashid across formats. The England leg spinner has dismissed the legendary batter 9 times as opposed to Moeen’s 10. Rashid bowled a dream leg spinner delivery in 2019, when the ball pitched around the leg stump, and viciously turned to crash in the off stump. Kohli was bewildered and could not believe the ball turned so much. Rashid has troubled Kohli across formats and often comes on top in this riveting battle.

Adelaide will host the second semi-final between India & England. The pitch aids spinners and Rashid will try to outfox Kohli with his smart variations. The former India captain though has a stellar record in Adelaide, and this time he would be keen to bash Rashid.

3. Hardik Pandya vs Mark Wood

Hardik Pandya has the third-best strike rate in the Indian team striking runs at 155.55. Pandya is the team’s designated finisher, his last blitz allows India to score a powerful score. With Dinesh Karthik struggling to live up to the finisher tag, the onus is on Pandya to score well in the death overs. In the semi-final, the all-rounder will be up against Mark Wood.

The English pacer is the fastest bowler clocking 150kmp regularly. Wood is also difficult to get away as he is pretty accurate in death. The fast bowler’s steep bouncer and yorker are difficult to hit. Pandya has come up with inventive plans to combat Wood. The right-arm pacer has taken nine wickets in four games with an economy rate of 7.5.
