Group 2 Runners-up: England – 7pts (+0.473 NRR)

England recovered from their shock loss against Ireland to win their final two matches and maintain a run-rate advantage over Australia.

Jos Buttler’s side will face the winners of Group 2, India, in the final four, although may require a selection change after Dawid Malan was forced off against Sri Lanka due to injury.

England did look a bit off-colour as a team in their first couple of matches in WC. Although they started with a five-wicket win against Afghanistan, it wasn’t a convincing performance as the Afghan bowlers made them toil hard to get to the target of 113.

The result in the next match was even worse as they lost to Ireland by five runs (DLS method). The following match against Australia got washed out and their semi-final hopes started sinking. But England really looked in their zone against New Zealand.

Jos Buttler struck form with the bat, Alex Hales carried his good form forward and the bowlers delivered a superb performance to restrict the Kiwis to 20 runs short of what they scored. It was a well-rounded performance and that’s exactly what England delivered again in the do-or-die clash against Sri Lanka. They defeated the Lankan Lions by four wickets to book their berth in the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
