Hylo Open Badminton Highlights: Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the semifinals of the Hylo Open 2022 as he defeated Jonatan Christie in straight games in the quarterfinal on Friday. India’s Women’s Doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand too booked a spot in the semifinal. They defeated Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Ya Ling and Lin Wang Chin 21-17, 18-21, 21-8 in the quarterfinal. Earlier, French Open 2022 winners Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bowed out from the tournament after suffering 17-21, 14-21 defeat against England’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy in the quarterfinal. Malvika Bansod too crashed out from the tournament after a straight game defeat against Indonesia’s Gregoria Tunjung. Kidambi Srikanth vs Jonatan Christie

Kidambi Srikanth took time to settle and started off the proceedings slowly. Christie took a narrow lead early but Srikanth gave a good fight and levelled the scores 8-8. The Indian entered the break with a slender 11-10 lead. But after the break, Srikanth took complete control of the game as he conceded just three points to his opponent and won the first game 21-13.

The second game too started off with a close fight but Srikanth managed to pip his opponent to enter the interval with a narrow 11-9 lead. Unlike the first game, Christie did not let the Indian run away with a big lead and was constantly challenging the Indian trying to reduce the deficit. However Srikanth too played an outstanding game as he won the game 21-19 to advance to semifinals.

In his last match, Srikanth beat world No. 43, Arnaud Merkle of France 11-21, 21-13, 21-10 to advance into the men’s singles quarter-finals. The Indian will face a stiff challenge from sixth-seeded Jonatan Christie in QFs.

Malvika Bansod vs Gregoria Mariska Tunjung 

In the women’s singles, rising Indian shuttler Malvika Bansod, who overcame 2018 CWG bronze medallist Kristy Gilmour in the R16 as she retired mid-way into the second game, couldn’t go past Indonesia’s Gregoria Tunjung in the quarterfinal as she suffered a 17-21, 10-21 defeat.

Bansod started the game on a positive note as she took a 7-4 lead early in the first game. However, Tunjung began her game as she took the next six points on the trot to take the scores to 10-7. Bansod tried to make a omeback as she levelled the scores 10-10 but Tunjung didn’t let the Indian to take the lead and entered the break with 11-10 lead.

The neck-to-neck battle continued after the interval in the first game. Bansod managed to level the scores 17-17. But it was Tunjung, who yet again ensured that the Indian didn’t go past her as she grabbed the next four points to take the first game 21-17.

In the second game, the Indian completely lost her intensity as right from the start the Indonesian was at her dominating best as she won the second game 21-10 to make the Indian crash out of the tournament.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty vs Ben Lane-Sean Vendy

Third seeded Indian pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered a straight game defeat against England’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy to bow out from the Hylo Open in the quarterfinals. The game started off with both the players showing a good intensity. Right from the start, it was a neck-to-neck battle and the Indians managed to take a slender 11-9 lead to enter the interval.

After the break, the English pair came back strongly as they levelled the scores 12-12. This time they ensured there are no slip ups as they took a 14-13 lead in the contest and went on to put pressure on the Indians to win the first game 21-17.

In the second game too the English duo played with the same intensity and managed to take a 5-3 lead early in the game. The Indian pair were not at their best as they let the English pair enter the break with a 11-7 lead. With the momentum on their side, they continued to challenge the Indian pair and clinched a 14-21 win in the second game to defeat the higher-ranked ranked Indian pair in straight games.

Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand vs HSU Ya Ching-LIN Wan Ching

Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand defeated Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Ya Ching- and Lin Wan Ching in the quarter-finals in three games to advance to the semifinals of the tournament. The Indian pair had a positive start to the contest as they took a 10-5 lead and were looking to enter the interval with a comfortable lead. However they let their big lead slip away as the Chinese Taipei pair managed to reduce the deficit to 10-9. Jolly-Gopichand pair did not let their opponent to level the scores and entered the break with a 11-9 lead.

After the interval, the Taiwanese pair continued their fight and managed to level the scores 12-12. But sensing the situation, the Indian pair showcased their class as they fought well to take the next six points on the trot to go up 19-13. From then on, it was easy for Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand to close out the game 21-17.

But the Chinese Taipei duo came back strongly in the second game as they took a 6-3 lead at the start of the game and entered the interval with a six point lead. The Indian pair tried hard to make a comeback as they got six points on the trot to reduce the deficit from 8-15 to 14-15. However the Taiwanese pair managed to take the contest into the decider by winning the second game 21-18.

In the final game, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand raised their intensity as they started attacking right from the start and entered the interval with a big 11-4 lead. From then on it bevame a one-way contest as the Indian pair won the game 21-8 and sealed their spot in the semifinals.
