After India’s emphatic 56-run victory over the Netherlands in the 2017 T20 World Cup, Shastri addressed the official broadcaster: “I think he is a three-format player. I know they do not talk about him in Test cricket, but he is a three-format player. This guy can play Test cricket and I’ll tell you what, he can surprise a few. Send him there at number 5 and let him stir it up.”
Kohli scored a 62* off 44, while Yadav finished up with a 25-ball 51*, as India ended their innings at a score of 179/2 in their 20 overs. The Dutch side in return ambled along to 123/9 as India sealed a win by 56 runs to push their net run rate up to +1.425.
Suryakumar Yadav also thanked Shastri for showing faith in his abilities.
“I still remember he called me up, he was sitting by the pool side, before me making my debut and told me ‘ja ke bindas dena’ (Go and smash them),” recalled Suryakumar.
In 2022 no batter in men’s T20Is has scored more runs than SKY’s 867. And he has hit those runs at a remarkable strike rate of 184.86.
Of front-line batters among the full member nations, only Jimmy Neesham has a higher strike-rate in the calendar year, with the New Zealand finisher’s runs coming in a totally contrasting role and in only a quarter of the volume.
Against the Netherlands on Thursday, Suryakumar along with Virat Kohli put on an unbeaten partnership of 95* in just 48 balls to lift India to 179/2, a total that proved too much for the Dutch to chase.
