French Open Badminton Highlights: Srikanth BEAT Lakshya Sen : Kidambi Srikanth showcased his class and experience to defeat his younger compatriot Lakshya Sen 21-18, 21-18 in the first round of the French Open on Wednesday. Earlier ,India’s Sameer Verma clinched a nail-biting victory in the first round of the French Open by defeating sixth seed Anthony Ginting 21-15, 21-23, 22-20 on Wednesday. Lakshya Sen vs Srikanth

Kidambi Srikanth prevailed over Lakshya Sen in an all-Indian duel to advance to the men’s singles second round of the French Open Super 750 badminton tournament on Wednesday.

Srikanth, the 2021 World Championships silver winner, beat junior compatriot Sen 21-18, 21-18 in a first round match that lasted 46 minutes.

Srikanth dominated the game right from the start and entered the first game break with a massive 11-4 lead. Even after the break Srikanth continued to lead but Lakshya showcased great fight as from 12-18, he won six straight points to level the scores 18-18. However Srikanth remained calm and closed out the game by winning the next three points.

In the second game, Lakshya Sen started off with a 4-0 lead. But Srikanth soon fought back and levelled the scores 5-5. Neck to-neck battle began from then on and Lakshya Sen managed to enter the break with 11-8 lead. Srikanth yet again levelled the contest 14-14 and from then on the neck-to-neck battle continued.

It was Srikanth, who showcased his experience and class and found ways to nullify the challenge from the World No.8 Lakshya Sen to win the set 21-18. Srikanth next faces the winner of the first round match between Rasmus Gemke of Denmark and Nhat Nguyen of Ireland.

Sameer Verma vs Anthony Ginting

Sameer Verma pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the day so far as he defeated sixth seed Anthony Ginting in a nail biting thriller on Wednesday. Playing his first match on the tour since the Singapore Open in July Verma looked in great touch as he took lead in the contest right from the start.

He entered the break in the first game with a 11-5 lead and looked in complete control, challenging the Indonesian with his smashes and drop shots. He didn’t allow his opponent even one opportunity to get back into the game as he won the first game comfortably 21-15.

In the second game, as expected Ginting made a comeback as he took a 6-2 lead at the start. But Verma didn’t want to lag behind and put on a good fight and entered the break with a slender 11-10 lead. But after the break Ginting started dominating as he ran away with an 18-13 lead. But Verma yet again made a comeback and had match point at his hand by leading 21-20. However he let go of the opportunity as Guinting won the game 23-21 and forced the contest into a decider.

In the decider, Ginting started off with a 5-0 lead. However Verma yet again showcased his fighting skills to reduce the deficit to 7-11 to enrter the break. Verma came back strongly after the break and managed to level the scores 14-14 with some terrific display of skills. From then on it was a neck-to-neck battle However Ginting had two match points on his hand as he lead 20-18.

When it looked like it was all over for the India, Sameer held his nerves in the crunch moment and managed to take four successive points to clinch a thrilling victory to advance to the second round.

HS Prannoy vs Liew Daren

Prannoy started the contest with a lead in the first game and entered the break with a slender 11-8 lead. Prannoy continued to maintain his lead in the first game and closed out the game comfortably 21-16. In the second set Liew Daren gave a good fight to Prannoy as right from the start it was a neck-to-neck battle. Prannoy managed to enter the break with a slender 11-10 lead.

However after the break, Daren came back strongly as to take 13-11 lead. From then on Daren played some outstanding Badminton to take the contest into the third set by winning the second game 21-16.

In the third game, both the players were involved in intense battle and Daren slowly took the lead to go 8-5 ahead. However. Prannoy showed great fight to take six successive points to lead 11-8 by the break. From then on, Prannoy managed to maintain his lead as he closed put the game 21-16 to advance to second round.

In the Men’s Doubles, India’s MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila lost in straight games against Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Fajar Alfian. With the victory the Indonesian pair sealed their fourth successive victory against the Indians.
