Arsenal were defeated 2-0 by PSV Eindhoven, denying them the opportunity to advance through to the Europa League final 16. The Premier League leaders, who have already clinched a position in the top two, needed just a point to be certified as group champions and avoid a playoff against a side that has previously dropped out of the Champions League. PSV, on the other hand, looked more better moving forward and earned a merited win with two second-half goals from Joey Veerman and half-time replacement Luuk de Jong.

Arsenal currently leads PSV by two points heading into the final group game against bottom-placed Zurich at home. PSV will go to Bodo/Glimt now that they have ensured progression from the group stage.

Mikel Arteta made six changes to the lineup that drew 1-1, including Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka, who came off the bench. Due to a groin injury suffered by US goalkeeper Matt Turner, regular No. 1 Aaron Ramsdale made his first Europa League appearance of the season. While Arsenal controlled possession in the first half, the hosts were the more dangerous of the two.

PSV had the ball in the net twice in the first 45 minutes, only to be denied by an offside ruling. First, at 19 minutes, Cody Gakpo appeared to have added to his growing reputation with a wonderful dinked finish, but the assistant referee promptly raised the offside flag.

A similar conclusion occurred two minutes before halftime. A VAR check for offside in the build-up interrupted PSV’s celebrations after Xavi Simons had forced his way past three Arsenal defenders on the edge of the box with a mix of brilliance and bad defence.

But after Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side bombarded Ramsdale’s goal early in the second half, they seized the lead with certainty. Substitute De Jong played an important part, holding up the ball and then handing it off to the sprinting Veerman, who smashed a left-footed effort past Ramsdale and into the Arsenal net.

PSV’s advantage was extended seven minutes later. De Jong was at the forefront once more, jumping ahead of the stranded Ramsdale to head Gakpo’s corner into an open net from six yards out. Arteta switched to Jesus and Saka off the bench to attempt to salvage something from the game, but they were unable to prevent Arsenal from suffering only their second loss in all competitions this season.
