BCCI Elections LIVE: Sourav Ganguly BCCI President: Ganguly vs Srinivasan: Sourav Ganguly has begun his counter-attacking play after taking the initial blow in BCCI’s powerplay. Still a godfather, former BCCI chief N Srinivasan had accused Ganguly of non-performance as the President. But following his ouster, Ganguly has broken his silence and has hit back at Srinivasan, listing his achievements during his tenure. During a meeting at the Trident hotel in Mumbai on Tuesday, he was shown the door. Follow BCCI AGM LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.

Sourav Ganguly’s BCCI Achievements:

  • Although credited to Jay Shah, it is during Ganguly’s tenure, BCCI successfully made IPL 2022 happen in India during Covid.
  • BCCI bagged Rs 48,000 Cr through IPL Media Rights deal.
  • U-19 team won the World Cup.
  • Ganguly installed Rahul Dravid as the head coach.
  • Another stalwart VVS Laxman became NCA director.
  • Women’s IPL’s blueprint was prepared.
  • India won the Test series in Australia.
  • Women’s team won the silver medal at CWG.

“I was a cricketer’s administrator. Many good things happened like IPL during Covid, IPL broadcast rights, U19 team winning the World Cup, Women’s team winning silver medal, India winning in Australia. So I enjoyed my time as the president,” Ganguly said at an event in Kolkata.

His comments come when former Indian cricketer Roger Binny is set to take over as BCCI president. BJP MLA Ashish Shelar is set to be the Treasurer replacing Arun Dhumal. While Ganguly wanted to stay on as the president, he was sidelined completely at the meeting. As per sources, Srinivasan launched a scathing attack, calling him a non-performer.

However, Ganguly isn’t one of the people to take the attack. He is fighting back. But he has not expressed his qualms about his BCCI ouster.

“As an administrator, you have to contribute a lot and make things better for the team. Me being a player, who was around for a long time, understood it. I enjoyed my time as an administrator thoroughly. You cannot play forever and you cannot remain in administration forever,” said Ganguly at an event.

BCCI Elections Live: Why Sreenivasan was against Ganguly?

  • The discomfort between the two dates back to 2019.
  • Srinivasan had almost put Brijesh Patel in the chair but the tables turned at the last minute when Ganguly was announced as the president.
  • Though he has never spoken about it in public, sources said Srinivasan never forgot this embarrassment and wanted to set it right.
  • For Srinivasan, it was a matter of prestige. He had to prove that his word still counts.
  • The official reason cited to Sourav is that no president has held office for two consecutive terms.
  • There was no reason the East’s candidate could enjoy this privilege.
  • It was learnt that Srinivasan had gone to the extent of accusing Sourav of failing to live up to expectations.

As for the changes in the board, Jay Shah will retain his position as the BCCI Secretary. At a BCCI meeting held at the Trident Hotel in Mumbai on Tuesday, all office bearers from different parts of the country from various associations filed nominations for different positions on the board.

The discussions were held in the internal BCCI meeting in the lead-up to the elections, scheduled for October 18.

Senior BCCI administrator Rajeev Shukla will remain the Vice-President of the board while Ashish Shelar is likely to take over as the new treasurer replacing Arun Dhumal.

Binny has previously served as a member of the BCCI selection committee and he is also a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team. The former pacer Roger Binny is said to be the frontrunner to replace Ganguly as the BCCI president. Binny, 67, is currently president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association.

The nominations can be filed on October 11 and 12, the scrutiny of the nominations will take place on October 13 and the candidates can withdraw their nominations latest by October 14.

Sourav Ganguly, the current President of BCCI, is tipped to be India’s representative for the 16-member International Cricket Council (ICC) Board Chairman’s post, elections for which are slated to be held this November.
