Italy

Italy is the biggest upset of this year’s winter World Cup. It feels like yesterday when Fabio Grosso sent Fabien Barthez the wrong way in the penalty shoot outs to win the 2006 World Cup. An even more recent example of their on field prowess is the 2020 Euro Cup where Bonucci led the team to another extra time victory against England. However, they couldn’t qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

They couldn’t secure a play off win against North Macedonia back in March. It led to their exclusion from this year’s World Cup. Italy is sitting on the 6th place on FIFA rankings right now. This makes them the highest ranked side to not feature in the upcoming World Cup.

Colombia

The ex Real Madrid star James Rodriguez had led Colombia to the round of sixteen and lost to England on the penalty shoot out. They looked sharp during the tournament and fought tooth and nails till the end. Colombia had always been an unpredictable force in the World Cups.

Back in 2014 they gave the hosts quite a scare in the quarter final. This feisty South American team also failed to secure a spot in Qatar. They came in sixth in the CONMEBOL’s qualifying standing. The first four teams got a straight entry.

Sweden does not have a rich history in World Cup like the prior two countries but their last year performance did ignite hope for a second successive World Cup appearance.

Chile

The two successive times Copa America champions Chile is another of the heavy weights who will have to sit this campaign out. Chile has been missing out on World Cup for quite some time now, Their current world ranking is 31. Australia, despite being in a lower ranking than Chile, Will play the upcoming World Cup.

The last time Chile qualified for the World Cup was back in 2010. It is still an upset not being able to see the likes of Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez one last time on the grand floor.
