Also known as Dasara or Dashain, and Vijyadashmi, the festival this year is being celebrated today with much enthusiasm and fervour.
The festival of Dusshera is observed throughout Nepal as well as all of India. Vijayadashmi, which commemorates the goddess Durga’s victory over the buffalo monster Mahishasura to restore and defend Dharma, marks the end of Durga Puja in several southern, eastern, north eastern, and southern Indian states. The idols of Durga, Saraswati, Laxmi, Ganesh, and Kartik are taken in a procession on this day and submerged in a body of water.
India’s northern, central, and western states observe Dussehra on this day to commemorate God Rama’s victory over Ravana.
