Federer, who was out of action for more than a year since the 2021 Wimbledon as he was recovering after undergoing a knee surgery, announced his decision to retire from Tennis just a few days before the Laver Cup and said that the tournament would be his last event in the ATP Tour in his career.

He then decided to play only in the doubles on the first day of the tournament and partnered with his long-time rival and friend Rafael Nadal. The dream pair played against Team World’s Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe. It was not a fairytale ending for Federer as he and Nadal lost the match. In the subsequent days, Federer was on the bench with his Team Europe mates, giving valuable inputs. However Team Europe lost the tournament for the first time as Team World won the title.

Sharing his thoughts about the retirement, Federer posted some of his memorable moments from the Laver Cup this year on his Instagram account on Thursday and wrote, “We all hope for a fairytale ending. Here’s how mine went: Lost my last singles, Lost my last doubles, Lost my last team event, Lost my voice during the week, Lost my job.”

He however was happy with the perfect farewell and wrote, “But still, my retirement could not have been more peRFect and I’m so happy with how everything went. So don’t overthink that perfect ending, yours will always be amazing in your own way.”

His last singles match was at the Wimbledon in 2021 in which he lost in the quarterfinal against Hubert Hurkacz. Despite not having a perfect final match, Federer was the first man on the planet to win 20 Grand Slam titles and has created his own legacy in the Tennis’ Open era.

It was a farewell that was never seen before as  Federer he had players like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray with whom he has shared some great rivalries in his career. All the four players were collectively called as the “Big Four” and everyone were with Federer, in his finally match, by his side, playing in the same team. Despite having been on-court rivals for a long time, Federer sharred a great rapport with each and everyone of them gave him an emotional and a fitting send-off, celebrating the person that he is and his career, that the sports world would never forget.
