India managed to avoid meeting all of the previous champions of the U-17 World Cup, which are Spain, France, Japan, South Korea, and North Korea, who have ended up winning this event since its inception in 2008. They’ll now try to finish in the top two of their group and make it to the quarterfinals. Notably, no host nation has ever reached the semifinals in the event’s previous six editions, all having lost in the group stage.

On October 11, India will face the United States, followed by a game against Morocco on October 14. India and Brazil will play their final group match on October 17. All of India’s games will be played at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

The United States is the top-ranked team in FIFA Women’s rankings, but their U17 World Cup performances have not reflected this. They have never progressed to the knockout stage, except for a second-place finish in 2008.

Even though the United States has never played India in international women’s soccer, US midfielder Mia Bhuta is of Indian heritage and was born in Pittsburgh. During World Cup qualifying in the Dominican Republic, she captained the team. In 2022, the team won the CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship, defeating Mexico 2-1 in the final. During the tournament, they outperformed their opposition 58-1 in seven games.

Morocco, like India, will be participating in their first FIFA Women’s World Cup at any level. Morocco, known as the ‘Atlas Lionesses,’ appear to be India’s easiest opponents in the group . They earned their place in the 2022 African U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifying rounds by defeating Ghana in the fourth and final round. Morocco won 2-0 at home in Rabat after losing the first leg 2-0 in Accra, and then won the penalty shootout 4-2 to secure their maiden berth in the tournament.

Potentially India’s most difficult group match will be against Brazil. Brazil has the best record of the three Group A teams. They will play in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the sixth time, having previously reached the quarterfinals in 2010 and 2012.

They’ve also been at their best this year. They won the South American U-17 Women’s Championship in Uruguay in 2022 and finished third to qualify for the World Cup. Brazil won all three games in the final stage, defeating third-place finishers Chile (8-0), Paraguay (3-0), and Colombia (1-0), to win the South American U-17 title for the fourth time.
