It was one of those innings for the New Zealand batters, where they were troubled by the Australia batters throughout the chase.

The target might have been a small one, but getting off to a good start was a must. But things did not go according to plan. After losing Martin Guptill for two, New Zealand never recovered. They lost wickets at regular intervals.

New Zealand had half of their team in the dressing room as they were reduced to 38/5 in the 21st over. With Zampa troubling the New Zealanders with his tricky leg-spin, they could not deal with his wizardry. They were eventually bundled out for 82 runs as Zampa took five. Mitchell Starc and Sean Abcott scalped two wickets in each as well.

Earlier, Steve Smith brought his A game to score the much needed half-century in a difficult batting pitch. The former captain showed his technical skills to ensure that the scoreboard is kept ticking.

In fact, had it not been for Smith, Australia could have bundled out for a small score. They were 7/2 with both David Warner and Aaron Finch in the hut quickly. Even when others around him lost their wickets, Smith held his side firm.

It was only when Maxwell joined Smith, the two brought their experience into play with a 49-run partnership. Both the players back in the dressing room with the team below the 120-run mark. But, Starc made a healthy contribution of 45-ball 38, which played an important role in Australia scoring 195 runs.

That target proved to be more than enough for Australia. It also meant Trent Boult’s four wicket for New Zealand went in vain.
