Sanju Samson put in a player of the match performance on Saturday as India sealed the series with a game to spare in Harare. Chasing 162, Samson scored an unbeaten 43 off just 39 balls to get his team over the line after a middle-order wobble. The fans were treated to some fine shots, and even chanted ‘Samson, Samson’ when India needed just one to win. The Rajasthan Royals captain obliged and finished the game in MS Dhoni style with a six.

“How much ever time you spend in the middle, it makes you feel good. Even more special to do it for the country. I did take three catches, but I missed a stumping. Really enjoying keeping and batting. I think they (Indian bowlers) were bowling really good areas, a lot of balls came nicely to me,” said Samson in a post-match conference.

The Rajasthan Royals captain donned the gloves in Harare and made a case to do it permanently in an athletic display. In the ninth over of the innings, Samson made a full length dive to help India strike their first wicket.
He followed that up with a good high grab down the leg side leaving no room for error behind the stumps. Samson’s catch opened the flood gates as the Indian pacer reduced Zimbabwe to just 31/4. Samson caught three of the four catches in a productive outing behind the stumps.

Samson will hope that his performances will catch the eye of the selectors as he faces stiff competition to make a comeback to the Indian team. The 27-year-old was part of India’s tour of West Indies, but was omitted from the Asia Cup 2022 squad with Deepak Hooda making the cut. Amomng keepers, Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik have been preferred.
