Proteas pace attack wreaked havoc on DAY 1. With Ollie Pope waging a lone battle with an unbeaten 61, England closed the day at 116/6. Anrich Nortje bagged three wickets while Kagiso Rabada returned with two.
Sent to bat, England lost both openers and their star Joe Root within the first hour. Jonny Bairstow too failed, departing for a five-ball duck. Captain Ben Stokes tried to fight back but was undone by Nortje as he departed for 20 just before lunch. Ben Foakes was the only batter to depart post lunch as the umpires called in the covers. The rest of the day’s play was not possible due to rain.
Earlier, South Africa captain Dean Elgar won the toss and opted to field at the Lord’s. This way, Dean Elgar can prevent a charge from England batters in the 4th innings. England have successful chased mammoth totals of late.

South Africa, meanwhile, will be eager to carry over their outstanding performance from the short overs format to the Tests.
