Lakshya Sen, a former junior world No.1 rose to prominence in his maiden World Championship appearance last year as he went on to reach the semifinals and won the bronze medal. Lakshya who was unseeded back then, clinched an upset victory over 15th seed Kenta Nishimoto in the second round and went on to reach the semifinals, where he lost to compatriot Kidambi Srikanth.

Compared to his last year’s draw, Lakshya Sen’s path to the final this year looks very tricky and the 20-year old needs to be at his best to go past his opponents. He is placed in the final quarter of the Men’s Singles draw which also has the nation’s next best players Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy.

Lakshya faces World No.19 Hans-Kristian Vittinghus in the first round. Vittinghus has a better head-to-head record record against Lakshya as out of the three games they played, the Danish has won two games. Though Lakshya has won their recent contest at the Indonesia Masters in 2022, Lakshya can’t afford to take Vittinghus lightly.

If Lakshya surpasses Vittinghus’ challenge, in the second round he can breathe a little as he will be facing either 74th ranked Luis Penalver or 117th ranked Daniel Nikolov. In the third round Lakshya will  probably face his biggest challenge as he is likely to face World No.2 and local favourite Kento Momota. Lakshya has a 1-2 head to head record against the Japanese and that solitary victory too came after Momota retired from the contest during 2021 World Tour finals.

If he manages to reach the quarterfinals, he is likely to be up against fifth seeded Lee Zii Jia, who skipped the Commonwealth Games on order to prepare for World Championships. Apart from Momota and Jia, the other seeded player in this quarter is Kidambi Srikanth, who is the 12th seed.

Lakshya has had a terrific year so far as he won his maiden BWF 500 tournament by clinching the Indian Open title. He also finished as runner-up at the German Open and All England Championships. He suffered a shoulder injury a month ago but came back to win the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
