CWG 2022 LIVE – Bindyarani Devi wins Silver: India’s Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam had a memorable debut in the Commonwealth Games as she won the silver medal in the Women’s 55 kg category by lifting a total of 202 kgs. What has made the victory even more special is she registered her personal best as well as created a commonwealth games record in the clean and jerk event by lifting 116 kgs. Incidentally all the four medals are won by the weighlifters as Sanket Sagar won silver 55kg men’s category and Gururaja Poojary won bronze in 61 kg. Mirabai Chanu won the country’s first gold medal by lifting a total of 202 kgs, whch is also a Commonwealth Games record.

On Saturday, Bindyarani started the proceedings in the snatch event by lifting 81kgs. She then followed it up with a successful lift of 84 kgs. She then completed the round by lifting 86 kgs in the third attempt. Then in the clean and jerk event, she started off by successfully lifting 110 kgs. She then failed in her lift of 114 kgs in the second attempt. But a spirited Bindyarani increased the weight to 116 kgs in the final attempt and followed it up with a nice lift to finish second and got her hands on the silver medal by registering a total lift of 202 kgs.

Nigeria’s Adijat Adenike Olarinoye won the gold medal and also created CWG record in the snatch by lifting 92 kgs. She then registered 111 kg in the clean and jerk and finished first with a combined tally of 203 kg, which is 1 kg above Bindyarani Devi.
