The visitors almost took a shock lead inside the opening 10 seconds but United’s blushes were saved when veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton did brilliantly to save Álvaro García’s vicious left-footed shot.

Cristiano Ronaldo started his first game of pre-season but it was the youngsters who impressed most in the early stages at Old Trafford, with 18-year-old Alejandro Garnacho a standout performer on the left wing.

Ronaldo would only play the first 45 minutes as United manager Erik ten Hag managed minutes ahead of his side’s Premier League opener against Brighton next Sunday.

He was replaced by Amad Diallo who make an almost instant impact as he crashed home the rebound after Diego López spilled an initial shot by Alex Telles.

Radamel Falcao, who spent a season on loan with United in 2014/15, almost levelled for Rayo when his shot bounced off the crossbar.

The LaLiga side did manage to equalise when Heaton was only able to parry Isi Palazón’s shot into the path of García to finish from close range.
