RSPG-owned Durban franchise have roped in Lance Klusener as their head coach for the first season of the CSA T20 League. Klusener is a South African legend, having featured in 171 ODI matches, scoring 2576 runs at an average of 41.10. He scored two centuries and 19 half-centuries and picked up 192 wickets in his career. He also featured in 49 Tests, scoring 1,906 at an average of around 32 and four centuries and eight fifties with 80 wickets to his name.
In a statement, the South African said that he was honoured to be offered the opportunity and is looking forward to meeting the team. He said, “I am honoured to join the RPSG family. This is a new challenge for me. It makes me very proud. I am looking forward to meeting the team.”

After his playing career, Klusener stepped into coaching, starting with the Durban Dolphins in the 2010s, before travelling around the world. He has since coached Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh on the international stage while also taking over roles in the Bangladesh Premier League, Tamil Nadu Premier League and IPL.
The Durban franchise is the second T20 team the RPSG group has acquired in the last 12 months after paying INR 7090 crore to buy the Lucknow franchise in the IPL in October last year. The owners were proactive in their business with LSG as well, confirming Andy Flower as their head coach even before the team name was confirmed.
The KL Rahul-led side had a good debut season, reaching the playoffs before being eventually eliminated by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Notably, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on July 19 that former captain Graeme Smith has been appointed as the Commissioner of South Africa’s new T20 league. Smith, Cricket’s most successful Test captain, will lead the new T20 League overseeing all aspects (both cricketing and non-cricketing) and developing what is anticipated to be a dynamic brand that showcases the strength of South African cricket. Earlier on April 29, Cricket South Africa (CSA) and SuperSport TV had announced the formation of a t20 competition featuring six private-owned franchises starting from January 2023 onwards.
