Sanju Samson was handed the keeper’s gloves ahead of Ishan Kishan with the Indian team management providing him with the perfect opportunity to make his case. Samson has only received a handful of opportunities and did well in the series against Ireland, scoring a career-best 77 in Dublin.
Having made way for Rishabh Pant, the Kerala-born batsman was handed a call-up to the West Indies ODIs and had the chance to stake his claim with a fine performance at Port of Spain. Coming into bat at No.5, the stage was set for Samson to go big and nail the boundary but he failed to do so.
In a disappointing performance, the keeper only managed 12 off 18 balls as India lost steam at the end of overs. With competition for places growing, a miss like this would only hurt Samson’s chances of making the T20 World Cup.
