The Dutch boss went with a 4-3-3 shape, with Fred supporting Donny Van der Beek and Bruno Fernandes up front. Yet it was defender Harry Maguire who went close early on with a header from a Luke Shaw corner, but Aston Villa ‘keeper Emiliano Martínez did extremely well to make the save.
Next, it was Villa’s turn to go close to breaking the deadlock when Matty Cash shot inches wide of the post before slipping over in the difficult conditions.
Jadon Sancho had been knocking on the door, and it was the 22-year-old that broke the deadlock, finishing an excellent team move with a volley at the far-post.

United doubled their lead in the pouring rain just before half time, when Villa’s Matty Cash was unfortunate to put the ball in the back of his own net when attempting to block a shot from Marcus Rashford.
The second half began with no changes from Ten Hag, but a half-time Villa substitute made an immediate impact as Leon Bailey cut inside Victor Lindelöf and curled his shot round David de Gea.
Maguire made a superb block on the line for an almost certain equaliser, before the United boss changed the entire outfield with ten changes.
United let their 2-0 lead slip as Calum Chambers netted an equaliser in added time, but in truth this was a good run out for both sides as they approach full fitness before the Premier League season begins on August 7th.
