7 Captains of Sri Lanka in 2017

India’s leadership shuffle is only the second time that an international men’s team has had seven captains in a calendar year. The first instance was Sri Lanka, five years ago, during a particularly chaotic period for the side.

2017 was a tumultuous yea, particularly for Sri Lanka cricket. Skipper Angelo Mathews led his side against South Africa in 2 Test and 2T20I games before picking up an injury. Ruled out with a hamstring injury for 5 months, Dinesh Chandimal captained the Lankan side for the last T20I where Sri Lanka won the series. In the upcoming five-match ODI series, Upul Tharanga was selected to be the skipper of the squad.

As Tharanga continued to captain the side in limited format Rangana Herath was selected to captain the Test squad. Following the latter’s suspension, Mathews returned for his injury. however, Mathews too gave away the captaincy after Sri Lanka lost a home series to Zimbabwe.
Chandimal was selected as the Test captain while Tharanga was selected to captain the team in the limited formats of the game.

Lasith Malinga and Chamara Kapugedera then went on to captain Sri Lanka in a couple of ODI matches. Later Thisara Perera became the 7th captain of the squad after quite a few first-team players expressed their displeasure to play the third T20I game against Pakistan scheduled to be played at Lahore.
