As per a Cricbuzz report, Star Sports have reached an agreement with Cricket Australia for the broadcast rights for the next four years. The deal has a provision to be extended by four more years and has been signed by both parties. The agreement, for both TV and digital rights, kicks in from next season. The current rights are with Sony, who continue to suffer due to the growing competition.

CA Broadcast Rights: Sony Sports continue to suffer from competition

  • Sony Sports continue to lose out on broadcast rights with Star Sports edging them out of the competition.
  • Current holders of Australia cricket rights, Star have now agreed on a four-year deal from next season.
  • Star already has IPL, India’s home games, T20 World Cup in their pocket.
  • The TV giants recently bagged the IPL media rights last month for the next five years. Viacom bought out the digital rights.
  • Star have now added Big Bash League, Ashes, Border Gavaskar Trophy to their already impressive offering.
  • Star is also set to be in competition for the ICC rights for the next cycle.
  • Star Sports – IPL, India’s home games, Ashes, Border Gavaskar Trophy, T20 World Cup, Big Bash League
  • Sony Sports – India tour of England, Pakistan Super League

Sony lost out to Star and Viacom18 in the IPL media rights auction, failing to bag either package. The loss of Australia cricket broadcast rights leaves them with rights for only England among the top teams. Sony are expected to be in the mix for the ICC media rights, but will once again face Star and Viacom, alongside international entities like Amazon and Facebook.

The report states that Cricket Australia though remain tight-lipped on the agreement. A CA spokesman refused to comment and said, “Nothing we can say on the record on that at the moment. I’ll let you know if that changes.”

Viacom18 will broadcast the extravaganza in India and also hold digital rights for the same. Viacom have also taken up LaLiga and Serie A rights. Sony Sports now only have UEFA rights to their name.
