South African beat England Highlights: Chasing 334, England got off to a fine start with Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow taking the attack to the South African bowlers. The duo put on another century stand going at almost a run a ball to keep the hosts in the chase. However, with the track helping the spinners, it was Keshav Maharaj who struck the first blow, dismissing Roy for 43.

Bairstow got to his half-century but soon departed as England started to collapse like a pack of cards. Soon England were reduced to 164/4 with Bairstow, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler all back in the hut. Stokes playing his final ODI could only manage 5 off 11 balls. The part-time spin of Aiden Markram did wonders as he got both Bairstow and Stokes.

Root meanwhile played a lone hand, with Liam Livingstone joining him for company. However, another promising partnership was broken with Lungi Ngidi getting the better of the latter. Moeen Ali soon followed with England needing almost 12 an over in the final 10 overs of the game.

Anrich Norje then joined the part dismissing the set Joe Root for 86. Curran and Brydon Carse soon followed after their cameos, as the speedster cleaned up the tail to bag a four-wicket haul. England were bowled out 271, falling short of their target by 62 runs.

Earlier South Africa captain Keshav Maharaj won the toss and opted to bat first in the testing heat at Chester Le Street. After Quinton de Kock was dismissed early, Janneman Malan and Rassie van der Dussen stitched a fine partnership to put the visitors in control. The duo put on 109 for the 2nd wicket before Malan was dismissed for 57.

Markram then joined forces with Dussen as the duo took full advantage of the batting-friendly conditions and accelerated the scoring. The latter was particularly fluent and made the most of his opportunity, slamming his third ODI hundred. Markram also reached his fifty in style in a stunning 151-run stand.

Just when it looked like South Africa would settle for a 350+ score, Liam Livingstone dismissed both Markram and Dussen in on over to put the breaks on the visitors. David Miller and Heinrich Klassen tried to add some much-needed fireworks in the end, but England bowled tight lines to restrict the Proteas to 333.
