He will only begin practice on August 1 with Asia Cup 2022 in mind. Virat Kohli opted out of the West Indies tour completely despite enduring a poor run of form. While his and selectors’ decision have been further questioned, his close aides believe it will do him a world of good. He has even sought spiritual help, attending kirtan in London with his wife.

Virat Kohli Break Plans: A month of break, how will it help King Kohli?

  • While not everyone is happy with the idea of Kohli taking a break during hiis poor form, it could help him like it did to Hardik Pandya.

While some call it a mental block and some term it as an inevitable phase of a sportsperson’s life, what Kohli is going through isn’t new. Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Rahul Dravid and every other cricketer have gone through.

But like Hardik Pandya regained his form and fitness going away from all the noise after his disastrous show at the T20 World Cup and injury, it could be a blessing for Kohli. Sports psychologist Dr Priyanka Sarkar explained that self-care would be the call of the hour for him during his slump in form in IPL 2022.

“There is nothing better than self-care at this juncture. With too much advice, comments, and judgments being thrown at him, the last thing he needs is another expert opinion. It is certainly added pressure even for a sportsman who has lived in the limelight ever since his debut. Self-care is of utmost importance at junctures like these when one is going through a rough patch because one tends to forget oneself quite often. Self-care is the key to an effective and long-lasting career regardless of the field that one works in,” she told TOI.

Perform or Perish: Selectors’ message to Virat Kohli

While Kohli has the backing of captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid besides BCCI’s top brass including Sourav Ganguly, selectors have issued a stern warning to the former captain: perform or perish. The T20 World Cup will be the most crucial tournament of his career. If he fails to get his form back in Australia, he will be dropped from T20 squad T20 World Cup. He can potentially be axed from India’s home series against Australia as well.

“There will always be a low after high and that is exactly what Virat is going through. But considering the team, nobody is immune. Ajinkya and Pujara too have been dropped and so did so many other cricketers. He will certainly feature in the T20 World Cup if he is fit. But that will be his last chance as we have to look at the team as well. If he doesn’t get his form back, he will be asked to go back to domestic and get his form back,” a selection committee member told InsideSport.
