IND vs ENG Live: Why India have gone with a four-pronged pace attack against England?
- Under former skipper Virat Kohli’s leadership, India has used five bowlers, especially in overseas Tests.
- They have gone with four pacers + one spinner combination and have had a huge success.
- During India’s Test tour to England in 2021, Shami, Siraj, Bumrah, and Thakur had picked up a combined tally of 50 wickets in four Test matches.
- India also used four pacers against South Africa in their last away tour. The pacers proved effective as India beat the hosts in the first Test.
- Against a fearless-looking England battling lineup, India have gone with the same formula which has yielded them success in recent overseas Tests.

IND vs ENG Live: Role of four pacers in the Indian team – Each of the four pacers offer a different skillset and are match-winners on their given day. Skipper Bumarh can manage to swing the ball both ways and uses his variations clearly. The right-ram pacer opens the bowling attack and often sets the tone of the innings. His Yorker is one of the best in business and often the best of the batters have no clue. The bounce Bumrah gets is also natural due to high-arm action.
Overall India’s stand-in-skipper has 123 wickets in 30 Tests. 100 of his wickets have come overseas Tests.
Mohammed Shami, Bumrah’s bowling partner at the other end has a beautiful seam position and his ability to seam it both ways is his biggest strength. The veteran has been pretty much unplayable in the first 15 overs due to immaculate seam movement in the air. Shami has taken most wickets upfront, but he is equally good with the old ball as he manages to get the late swing. The right-ram pacer has taken 214 wickets in 60 Tests.

Mohammed Siraj can also swing the ball into the right-hander and hit the hard lengths time again. His control is his biggest strength. He is also pretty attacking with the ball in hand and always hunts for wickets. Siraj comes first change and ensures the pressure is on batters most times. Siraj has taken 36 wickets in 13 Tests.
Shardul Thakur the fourth change bowler relies on more outswing and is often used in the latter stages of the innings. Thakur’s role is to break partnerships and deliver impactful performances in the middle stage of the innings. The all-rounder has taken 26 wickets in 8 Test matches.
