India vs Leicestershire: India Tour of England – As India embarks on a new campaign against England, skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid will have a lot to worry about ahead of the India tour of England. • India opening conundrum – The India team faces a major disadvantage in terms of the opening order. Rohit Sharma is the open-standing batter. Sharma will be accompanied by Shubman Gill who has been in the poor form off late. Rohit and Gill have last together in the World Test Championship and thus will be an apparently a new combination. Moreover, the opening combo of Rohit-Rahul has been hugely successful and therefore young Gill will have huge shoes to fill in.

Gill who last featured against New Zealand in Mumbai will play his first game of the year. At the Mumbai test, he scored 44 and 47 in both the innings. He had a good outing in IPL for Gujarat Titans where he scored 483 runs. A huge responsibility will befall Gill after KL Rahul was ruled out owing to an injury and Mayank Agarwal was dropped.

  • Virat Kohli – India’s top-order batter Virat Kohli has been performing poorly for quite some time. Centuries have evaded Kohli for years and therefore the batter will be eager to make his bat speak. The former Indian team skipper had a poor run in IPL 2022 for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Virat managed to score just 341 runs in 16 innings with a mere average of 22.73. Kohli managed just 2 fifties in his latest IPL stint and would naturally be hungry to get back into his top form. Kohli who has recently recovered from Covid will be hoping to perform well in the upcoming series.

  • Ravindra Jadeja fitness – Ashwin replacement – The choice of the primary all-rounder for the upcoming game against Leicestershire will surely bother both Rohit and Dravid. Ravi Ashwin missed his flight to England after contracting covid and is expected to travel by 23rd June. Having just recovered from Covid, it is expected that Ashwin will be exempted from taking any part in the warm-up match.

The next choice is naturally Ravindra Jadeja to take Ashwin’s spot in the team. But there are still questions raised about Jadeja. First and foremost, Jadeja’s fitness is a major concern for the India team. During IPL 2022, Jadeja missed the last games of CSK after enduring a back injury, and therefore match fitness for Jadeja will be a major concern. Secondly, Jadeja was exceptionally poor for CSK in IPL 2022. He managed to score just 116 runs in 10 innings and scalped only 5 wickets.

  • Slip fielding – India missed many catches and leaked runs, particularly through the slip area and therefore this can be a worry for Rahul and Dravid. As a means to neutralize this threat, Cheteshwar Pujara was seen taking fielding lessons with coach Vikram Rathour with the new Dukes ball.Pujara has been working closely with the coach while he improves on the Indian team’s fielding aspect. India will also not have Ajinkya Rahane at the slip and only Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara will be two experienced fielders in that fielding area.
  • Middle order places – Shreyas, Pujara, Vihari to fight for it – There will be a huge contention to fill the spots in the middle order of the Indian batting lineup. The trio of Shreyas Iyer, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Hanuma Vihari will be fighting with one another to compete for the spot.

Cheteshwar Pujara is the only Indian batter to have red-ball experience in recent times sowing to his county cricket exploits and thus can ensure his spot in the team. The fight for the spot will be between Vihari and Iyer with both dependable players fighting for the same spot.
