Speaking at a TNCA event on Sunday, Vijay revealed that a combination of injuries and personal life troubles kept him away from the cricket field over the past 24 months. Vijay had missed action for Tamil Nadu as well having not been vaccinated, but is now available with that hurdle cleared.

“I am coming back now. This season, I am playing the TNPL. I am going to play cricket for as long as possible. Just took a personal break, I have a young family and got to take care of them. I am enjoying cricket, feeling fit and hopefully I can do my best for my team,” he said.

TNPL 2022: Murali Vijay all set to make a comeback after a 2 year hiatus, says “I just want to enjoy playing cricket”

Speaking on his hiatus, Vijay said, “It (lockdown and not playing) was difficult for me personally because I wanted to play the game. I had two injuries and was really going through the tough phase. So just I wanted to slow it down and see where I am standing, I wanted to reflect on myself. And that’s why the break was required and needed at that particular time. ”

The former India opener was grateful for the opportunity presented to him by the TNCA and lavished TNPL for giving the players a platform to express themselves.

“Luckily, the TNCA have understood it and they have given me this beautiful platform (TNPL) to come back and play. TNPL is a gift for Tamil Nadu cricket. I am keen to go out and perform. I also want to make use of this opportunity to rub shoulders with the youngsters and help them to realise their potential,” Vijay added.

Now 38, Vijay is not setting any goals on his comeback and just wants to continue playing the sport for as long as he can. The former Chennai Super Kings star said, “I don’t have any aims at the moment. I just want to enjoy this space of my life and see where it takes me.”

Vijay last played for India in Perth in the 2018-19 season, having made his debut way back in 2008. In his career, the Tamil Nadu icon slammed 3982 runs with 12 hundreds in 61 Tests for his country.
