“Having regard to the larger public interest involved, the print and electronic media is advised to refrain from publishing advertisements of online betting platforms. It should be noted that the GoI had earlier issued an advisory in 2020 on not showing such ads on TV. However, it is not a “ban”. With lack of clarity on betting advertisements and its legal stature in India, there has been an influx of ads on sports channels and digital media.

Earlier, many flagged concerns that advertisements of betting violate the Advertising  Standards Council of India (ASCI) guidelines. Under the guidelines, “advertisements shall not propagate products, the use of which is banned under the law”.

The ASCI also said that real-money gaming or gambling ads should not appear on any platform including OTT and digital media. However, despite the advisory, such ads have continued to be promoted during live matches of IPL 2022 and other India series.
