IPL Media Rights Tender: IPL digital media rights could go to biggest industrial house of India from next year

As per a Cricbuzz report, Fantasy Sports giants Dream11 have also pulled out from the race for the IPL media rights. Dream11 have a history of participating in cricket properties but has stayed out of the competition. Fancode, a Dream Sports entity, has the hosting rights for India’s tour of the West Indies.

FanCode has tie-ups with American leagues such as Major League Basketball, National Football League, and the National Basketball Association, according to the Dream Sports website. It also has tie-ups with FIVB, the West Indies Cricket Board, Bangladesh Premier League, Caribbean Premier League, Bundesliga, and I-League, according to the side.

The news of Dream11’s pullout comes after major global players Amazon and Facebook also distanced themselves from the bidding war. Disney Star, Sony Network, Viacom 18, Times Internet, and FunAsia are the only parties who have submitted a technical bid.

Disney Star held the rights for the previous cycle, while Sony Network had the rights in the initial years of the IPL. The two Indian broadcast giants are set to go toe to toe once again, while Viacom 18 is also set to make their play and be a huge player in the bidding process.

The bids will be evaluated TECHNICALLY by the BCCI Legal and finance committee team. The Technical evaluation will be completed by 6 PM today. The bidders who qualified technically will advance to the BIDDING ROUND which will be conducted on Sunday.

IPL Media Rights E-Auction – All you need to know

  1. When is the e-auction?

The IPL has decided to carry out the bidding for the first time via the e-auction. The E-Auctions will take place on Sunday in Mumbai at 11 AM with all bidders bidding from the confines of their own offies.

There is no end date and the e-auction will continue until all bids are exhausted.

  1. What is the shelf life of the rights?

The rights cycle spans for five IPL seasons: from 2023 to 2027.

  1. How many packages are there?

There are four packages: A, B, C and D.

  • Package A consists solely of TV rights for the Indian subcontinent only.
  • Package B caters to digital rights only and exclusively for the Indian subcontinent.
  • Package C contains digital rights for a special bouquet of matches, including the playoffs, for the Indian subcontinent only – NON-EXCLUSIVE Package
  • Package D, which comprises rights for the Rest of the World for both TV and digital, is divided into two sub-categories: combined ROW or five individual regions.
  1. What matches comprise Package C?
  • Package C comprises ‘Special Package’ matches. The number of matches in this package, the IPL has said, will vary depending on the total number of matches in the season.
  • If the IPL comprises 74 matches (like IPL 2022), the Special Package will have 18 matches.
  • If there are more than 74 matches in a season, then the Special Package matches will rise in steps of two for every additional 10 matches.
  • Why its a SPECIAL PACKAGE is because it is a NON-EXCLUSIVE Package.
  1. How does the bidding process work?

Each of the four packages has a separate per match base price.

Bidders will need to list an amount that is at least the cumulative base price amount (74 x base price for each package). The highest bidder will get the rights for individual packages.
