Poland’s Swiatek needed 1 hour and 8 minutes to overcome first-time Grand Slam single finalist Coco Gauff. She won her maiden Grand Slam title, which was also at Roland Garros two years ago, as an unseeded teenager. This time, Swiatek takes her second French Open title by being the World No.1, winning a staggering 35th consecutive match. With the victory she has now tied with Venus Williams for the best winning streak this century. Williams achieved the feat in 2000.

Having just turned 21 on Tuesday, Swiatek is the fourth-youngest player to triumph more than once in Paris — only Monica Seles, Stefanie Graf, and Chris Evert were younger when they did so. Swiatek is also the youngest woman to win multiple majors since Maria Sharapova won her second Grand Slam title aged 19 at the 2006 US Open.

Swiatek opened the contest straightaway by breaking Gauff in the very first game of the match. In Gauff’s second service game, the teenager tried hard to hold serve but after a three-deuce game, Swiatek had the advantage and Gauff commiteed a net error to give Swiatek 3-0 lead. She broke Gauff for the third time to take 5-1 lead and then held on to her serve to win the first set 6-1.

Gauff created some intrigue right away in the second set, drawing errors from the top seed as she earned her only break of the match en route to 2-0. However, Swiatek regrouped, finding sterling returns to get back on track and win the next five games successively.

Gauff gritted out a tough hold for 5-3, forcing Swiatek to serve for the championship, but the World No.1 was up to the task, as she has been all season. On the first championship point, Gauff sent a service return long, and Swiatek grasped her second Grand Slam trophy.

Swiatek’s Early Career

  • Began her professional career on the ITF Circuit in 2016 and won all seven singles finals she contested over the next two years.
  • Made her first Grand Slam main draw appearance at the 2019 Australian Open and defeated Ana Bogdan in the opening round before losing to Camila Giorgi.
  • Defeated Sofia Kenin in the 2020 French Open final to become the youngest women’s Roland Garros champion since Monica Seles in 1992. She did not drop a set throughout the claycourt major.
  • In 2021, she broke into the top 10 for the first time, finishing the year as world number four. She was also the only player to reach the second week at all four Grand Slams in 2021.
  • Rose to world number one in April 2022 after the retirement of erstwhile top-ranked player Ash Barty.
  • Won five straight WTA titles – Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart and Rome – before defeating Gauff on Saturday
