Bangladesh Cricket: Mominul Haque RESIGNS from Test captaincy of Bangladesh after string of poor results, admits “captaining a team is TOUGH”

Veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has previously had two stints as the Test captain of the Tigers – first in 2009 and then in 2017. Overall, Bangladesh have won only three Test matches under his captaincy, but they will be hoping for a better show this time around.

Mominul Haque stepped down as Bangladesh’s Test captain after a series defeat against Sri Lanka

Notably, Mominul Haque relinquished Test captaincy after his team lost 1-0 against Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series. Meanwhile, the Tigers had also lost 2-0 against South Africa last month, while Haque himself failed to show any kind of form with the bat.

Justifying his decision, Mominul said “When you play well, even if the team doesn’t win, you are still in a position to motivate them. I felt that captaining a side is tough when I am not scoring and team is not winning. I think it is best to quit the captaincy.”

I feel I should focus on my batting. It wasn’t a hard decision. A captain has to contribute otherwise it brings a lot of pressure. The board president told me to stay on but I don’t want to be the captain,” he further added.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh are placed in the 8th position in the 2021-23 ICC World Test Championship points table, having won only one of their eight matches so far. Shakib’s first assignment in his third stint as the Test skipper will be a two-match away Test series against West Indies, which will start on June 16. Liton Das will be deputizing him.
