“The players are very aware of the situation in Sri Lanka. It’s fair to say there is a level of discomfort around touring in conditions that contrast those faced by the people of Sri Lanka, such as rising food prices, power cuts and fuel rationing,” Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg told the Australian press.

While Cricket Australia has green-signalled the tour, the players have raised ethical concerns. They believe it will not be right to tour a nation when the general public is fighting for their basics. However, they will back Cricket Australia’s decision, CEO Todd Greenberg said.

“Ultimately our players want to continue to play cricket and will take direction, guidance and advice from CA about tour arrangements and planning,” Greenberg added.

Australia Tour of SL: Why Australian players have raised concerns?

  • Sri Lanka is going through their worst economic crisis since independence in 1948.
  • With the country’s tourism hit hard due to Covid restrictions, Sri Lanka’s foreign reserves have taken a toll.
  • The island nation is not even able to buy fuel and provide basic necessities like electricity to its people.
  • There is an acute shortage of fuel, medicine and food supplies and it is only getting worse every day.
  • There have been country-wide protests every day with the government order shoot at sight order.

Sri Lanka is reeling under its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948, with a severe shortage of foreign exchange severely curtailing imports, including essentials such as fuel and medicines.

Demonstrations have roiled the country since late March, and violence broke out two weeks ago after clashes between government supporters and protesters in Colombo sparked further incidents across the country that left nine people dead and about 300 injured.

Sri Lanka Cricket requested Cricket Australia to play the Test series first due to the shortage of fuel but the Australians refused it. If the Test series had been played before the limited-overs series, the SLC could have managed to stockpile fuel for their generators for Day-Night matches.

With the tour commencing on June 7, a final decision is expected this week. If the tour does not go through, SLC will lose over a million dollars at a critical period. Furthermore, they will also lose the hosting rights for the Asia Cup, which is another crucial tournament to boost the foreign reserves.

Australia have announced three strong squads for the seven-week tour in June and July, which includes a Twenty20 series, five one-day internationals as well as two Tests in Galle.
