Gilbert burns plans to dominate the division: The Brazilian ranked two in the welterweight division glided to rank 4 amidst his fight with the rising star, Khamzat Chimaev.
UFC 273 witnessed a spectacular 3-round match between Gilbert burns and Khamzat Chimaev. Burns’s loss in the match was so edgy that some believe it might need a rematch.
However, The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt needs to regain his lost position by challenging only one of the top contenders, not anyone below his rank.
Gilbert Burns, in his recent interview, pointed out his next fight card to be fighting Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington.
Colby Covington said,
“I don’t want to get another back-of-the-line contender,” he continued. “No, now I’m becoming a draw in that division. Now I’m on the cards. I’ll still fight anyone, don’t get me wrong, but you have to prove your point, that you deserve to be there right now.”
“My next fight I’m coming with blood in my mouth,” Burns said. “That fight with Khamzat was so close. A lot of people saw the heart, the work, and that there’s no quit in me. I’m going to keep showing that in my next fight. With a big name, I’m going to show people what I’m capable of. And to cement my career and journey, I have to get that belt. And nothing but a big fight can get me closer to that.”
Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal were close friends and ended up being the pertinent rivals in UFC history. Their feud escalated to such an extent that leaded Masvidal to punch Chaos outside a Restoration in Miami.
There is an ongoing battery trial on Masvidal on the incident. However, both the fighters are welterweight tycoons and Gilbert Burns doesn’t want to miss out on a chance to fight them. Among them, Colby Covington ranks as the no1 contender in the welterweight division.
A fight with any top contender in the welterweight division would fetch a quick climb for burns. He previously challenged the pound to pound number one fighter, Kamaru Usman, and sustained a loss.
