Carlos Sainz insists he wants a two-year deal with Ferrari. But the team is adamant about pushing for a one-year deal with an option of a second-year deal as well. Both team and driver have said for quite a while that another contract is essentially settled for the 27-year-old to go on with the team. The team principal of Ferrari Mattia Binotto expressed as far back as December that his future with the group post the end of 2022 would be talked about.

Meanwhile, Sainz said in February that he had developed a great bond with his team. “We are both happy with the situation and want to continue working together,” Sainz said. Till now, no announcement has been made about a new deal for Sainz.
While that would keep the team’s choices open for 2024, this puts additional pressure on Sainz with less security in his seat for the following year. Regardless of being on the podium two times, Sainz has fallen well behind Charles Leclerc in the Drivers’ Championship standings. The former McLaren driver is now 38 points short of the Monegasque driver after only three races.

Meanwhile, there have also been talks of Ferrari prioritizing Charles Leclerc and treating Sainz as a second-fiddle, but Binotto has rubbished such claims and has confirmed that he wants both his drivers to ‘fight on the track’ and challenge for race wins.
