1. Missing Deepak Chahar big time

Deepak Chahar has been a key bowler for CSK especially in the powerplay over the last few seasons and his absence due to injury has impacted the team so much. This year CSK has the worst economy rate in the powerplay as they have conceded 9.4 runs on average in the first six overs. Lucknow Super Giants come next with an economy rate of 8.7.

Since his CSK debut in 2018, Deepak Chahar has picked up 58 wickets in as many games and 42 of those wickets have come in the powerplay. This year though the CSK bowlers have picked up just 2 wickets in the powerplay in four matches.

After the team’s loss against Punjab Kings in the last game Jadeja too spoke about how the team is missing Chahar.

“It is always important to get early wicket in the powerplay. As a bowling unit, you always aim to pick 2-3 wickets in the powerplay. So we are definitely missing Deepak Chahar,” he said.

2. Jadeja is not stepping up as captain

Ever since being appointed as the skipper of the team, Jadeja looks like he has been overburdened with the role. Jadeja’s form with both the bat and the ball too has tapered and he looks like a man who has completely gone into a shell. He has scored just 66 runs in four innings with the bat. He has also taken only a solitary wicket in four matches at an economy of 7.76. Chennai Super Kings are missing the all-rounder Jadeja big time.

His captaincy too hasn’t been proactive in the season so far and his decision-making skills in terms of bowling changes has also been not effective. Against Lucknow Super Giants, Shivam Dube was given the 19th over in which 23 runs were smashed, which effectively cost CSK two crucial points.

3. Pace bowling weakness

Last year CSK had two Indian pacers in Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur and players like Sam Curran and Dwayne Bravo formed a potent pace attack. However this year, with Deepak Chahar’s injury, the inexperience at the pace bowling department has been exposed.

CSK earlier tested Tushar Despande and are now playing with left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary, who is playing his first season of IPL. Both the players have been ineffective and Dwayne Bravo, Dwayne Pretorius and Chris Jordan too couldn’t do much with the ball so far.

Bravo has picked up six wickets in four games and Pretorius too has scalped four but their economy rate is much above 7.5 runs per over. Both the bowlers have not performed to their best so far and this too has contributed to the team’s poor show in the season.
