In IPL 2022, the conditions have heavily favoured the chasing teams. Out of 11 matches so far, chasing teams have won 75% of the matches. If matches in Mumbai are to be considered, only two teams have won batting second. The major reason for that is the dew as the Arabian sea nearby makes it a factor difficult to avoid.

“Yes, there have been too many one-sided contests for chasing teams and we have decided to use the anti-dew spray. It doesn’t take the dew out of the contest but negates the effect. It will be used for all afternoon games,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.IN.

IPL 2022: How has dew tilted matches?

So far, in Mumbai, 7 out of 9 matches have been won the teams batting second. CSK coach Stephen Fleming was particularly unhappy about this.

“If you looked earlier on, spinning options were taken out of play. Because of the wetness, they played well. So, it was very hard for one: to grip the ball for a spinner and two: to be effective,” Fleming said after their loss against LSG.

Shreyas Iyer termed it swimming pool while KL Rahul too wasn’t happy about it.

  • With too much dew, bowlers are unable to grip the ball properly.
  • Without much grip, the ball slips from hand and they fail to control the delivery, ending in easy runs.
  • For spinners, it has the worst effect as gripping the ball properly is everything for spinners.
  • The groundsmen used super-soppers to negate the dew effect but it didn’t work.

IPL 2022: What is the magic spray MCA has been using?

From the 10th match between CSK and PBKS, the ground staff of Brabourne Stadium were seen spraying the surface two hours before the match. It is a chemical agent that reduces dew.

  • The chemical agent used to spray the field is called APSA-80, a commonly used chemical in farming.
  • The APSA-80 droplets bond with the grass and prevent moisture from forming.
  • MCA uses an APSA-80 agent manufactured by Amway.
  • The effect was visible as there was hardly any dew in the CSK vs PBKS match.

ICC approved the usage of APSA-80 back in 2006 for India’s series against New Zealand in Punjab. Since then, it has been in use.
