The 70-year-old manager spoke to Dutch television channel RTL, where he opened up about his disease. The two-time La Liga-winning manager further revealed that he has already undergone 25 bouts of radiotherapy, including in the evening during training camps with the Dutch team.

“I didn’t want to tell it to my players because it could have influenced their performances. In each period during my time as manager of the national team, I had to leave in the night to go to the hospital without the players finding it out until now. While thinking I was healthy, but I am not,” van Gaal stated.

Tragically, van Gaal’s first wife Fernanda Obbes died after being diagnosed with liver and pancreatic cancer. Speaking about that incident, he said “I’ve been through a lot with illnesses, including with my own wife. So that’s just part of life. I as a human being have probably become richer because of all those experiences.”

The football fraternity has come together in wishing the legendary manager good health as he continues his fight against the deadly disease. Manchester United, the English club with whom van Gaal won the 2015-16 FA Cup, wrote “Everybody at Manchester United is fully behind our former manager, Louis van Gaal, in his battle against cancer.
