We take a look at the top 10 major incidents that took place at the Australian Grand Prix in the last decade. The Australian Grand Prix this year will start from 8th April and the main event will be on 10th April.

Formula 1: Back after a gap

The Australian Grand Prix is making its way to the Formula 1 calendar after two years. It was cancelled in the 2020 and 2021 seasons. In 2020, the race got cancelled just before the FP1 session. The reason was that one of McLaren’s team members had tested positive for Covid-19. However, McLaren then withdrew from the race. In 2021, it was again cancelled due to Covid-19 ‘restrictions and logistical challenges.’

Formula 1: No longer the first GP of the calendar year

Australian Grand Prix used to be the season opener in Formula 1 for many years. But, now the season opener for the past two years has been the Bahrain Grand Prix. The Australian Grand Prix has been held a total of 84 times in F1.

Formula 1: Most Constructors Wins

Ferrari and McLaren are the two most successful Constructors who have won the most in the Australian Grand Prix. Both of the teams have won 12 times each.

McLaren won in the years 1970, 1986, 1988, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2003, 2008, 2010, and 2012.

Whereas, Ferrari won in the years 1957, 1958, 1969, 1987, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2017, and 2018.

1-2 Finish for Teams

In 2015, it was Mercedes who had a 1-2 finish at the Australian Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton won the race followed by his teammate Nico Rosberg who finished second.

In 2016, it was again Mercedes who had a 1-2 finish at the Australian Grand Prix. This time Nico Rosberg won the race with Lewis Hamilton in the second position.

In 2019, Mercedes again had a 1-2 finish at the Australian Grand Prix. Valtteri Bottas won the race with Lewis Hamilton claiming the second position.

Fastest Lap Timing

Valtteri Bottas, who then used to race for Mercedes had set the fastest lap time at the Australian Grand Prix in 2019. On top of it, he even won the race after setting a lap time of 1m25.580s.

Kimi Raikkonen won in 2013 starting from the seventh position

Kimi Raikkonen had a day in the office to remember. He had finished seventh in the qualifying session. However, he still had his eyes on the podium even after qualifying in seventh place. He had a magnificent race and won the 2013 Australian Grand Prix. He outclassed Fernando Alonso, who finished second and Sebastian Vettel, who finished third.

Kimi Raikkonen 2013 win with Lotus-Renault

Kimi Raikkonen was driving for Lotus-Renault and finished seventh in the qualifying session. The Red Bull, Mercedes’, and Ferrari were ahead of him. But, he didn’t lose his cool and took Lotus-Renault to a famous win in 2013. Back then, Lotus-Renault was not a match against the big teams. But, Kimi did the unachievable and finally clinched the win from the hands of big teams. This record was later broken by Pierre Gasly, who drives for AlphaTauri. Gasly had a great race as he won the Italian Grand Prix in 2020 by outclassing the big teams.

Only 5 Constructors have won it from 2011

Red Bull have won once at the Australian Grand Prix in 2011. McLaren have also won the Australian Grand Prix once in 2012. Lotus-Renault have also won the Australian Grand Prix in 2013.

Mercedes have won four times the Australian Grand Prix in the years 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2019. Ferrari have won the Australian Grand Prix twice in the year 2017 and 2018.

Most Pole Position in last decade at the Australian Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel has two pole positions to his name at the Australian Grand Prix. Both of them came in the years 2011 and 2013. But Lewis Hamilton has dominated the pole positions ever since. Hamilton has seven pole positions to his name and they came in the years 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.

Most positions gained and lost by drivers

Jenson Button had lost the most number of positions. He had lost -5 positions. Whereas, Australia’s very own, Daniel Ricciardo had the most gains. He had gained +5 positions over the last decade.
