Indian as ICC Chairman: Why does BCCI want an Indian leader for ICC? The upcoming instalment of cricket’s grandest competition will be staged in India.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, the consensus in BCCI is that an Indian should be leading ICC during the mega event.
Previously, four Indians have led the global cricket governing body. Sharad Pawar was the ICC President during India’s triumphant 2011 ICC World Cup campaign, and BCCI is reportedly planning for a similar occurrence ahead of the 2023 World Cup.

Check out which four Indians have held the highest positions in ICC:
- Till 2014, the President was the highest position in ICC.
- There have been two Indian presidents in the past in ICC – Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997-2000), and Sharad Pawar (2010-2012)
- India won the 2011 ICC World Cup with Pawar at the helm in ICC.
- The regulations of ICC were updated in 2014, which saw a new position being created called the Chairman.
- Two Indians have occupied the chairman’s seat so far in ICC – N Srinivasan (2014-2015), and Shashank Manohar (2015-2020)
Who is currently leading ICC? Currently, Greg Barclay is the chairman of ICC, having assumed office in December of 2020. The rules state that an ICC chairman is elected for a period of two years, but given that there is an Annual Conference in July, we could see an early positional shift. It will also be interesting to see whether BCCI proceeds with their plan, since they have a favourable working relationship with Barclay.

BCCI forms Local Organisation Committee (LOC) – While the chairmanship ambitions remain a long shot as of now, BCCI has started the groundwork of forming a LOC, which is a must for the nation hosting a World Cup.

According to reports in Cricbuzz, general manager Abey Kuruvilla, assistant general manager Gaurav Saxena, and interim CEO Hemang Amin are among the leading candidates for the highest positions in the LOC. The tournament will be played between October-November next year.
