Questions surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s commitment and Professionalism have been raised after the star forward flew back to Portugal before the Manchester derby. As per reports, interim manager Ralf Ragnick was set to bench Ronaldo as part of a new strategy in the build-up to the derby. The United legend argued against the move and was reportedly furious with the decision.

As per SunSport, Manchester United teammates were surprised to see that Ronaldo did not check in with the rest of the team at the hotel. The 37-yer-old flew home citing n injury, with the club’s medical department informing Ragnick on Friday that Ronaldo had a hip flexor injury.

Rumours began to swirl on social media on Saturday night that Ronaldo had pulled out of the squad. The Instagram account that started the rumour is cr7.0_lendario — which is followed by Ronaldo.

A post claimed: “Manchester United’s manager wants to enter with a different strategy in tomorrow’s game and has chosen to defend himself more, a purely tactical choice. Ronaldo won’t even be on the bench.” The post was liked by Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro.

Following the game, however, Rangnick downplayed those rumours and insisted that Ronaldo’s absence was nothing more than an injury.

“The doctor came to see me on Friday and told me Cristiano cannot train due to a problem with his hip flexor and the same was true on Saturday and that’s why he couldn’t be part of the squad. It’s just a fact if players tell the medical department that they are injured and they cannot play I have to accept it,” Ragnick added.
