Russia-Ukraine War: War claims lives of Two Footballers – The war between the two nations claimed the lives of two young Ukrainian footballers. Vitalii Sapylo, 21, and Dmytro Martynenko, 25 are the two casualties of the war as reported by FIFPRO on Tuesday. Both the players were playing the different domestic leagues of Ukraine. Vitalii Sapylo was a member of Karpaty Lviv, a second division team of the country. It was reported that Sapylo took an active part in the war after Russia invaded his country. He was posted in the war in the post of a tank commander in Kyiv.

“Our thoughts are with the families, friends and team-mates of young Ukrainian footballers Vitalii Sapylo and Dmytro Martynenko, football’s first reported losses in this war. May they both rest in peace.” FIFPRO said.
Dmytro Martynenko the second footballer casualty of the war was reportedly killed along with his mother after his apartment was bombed by the Russian troops in Kyiv. Martynenko played for FC Gostomel, an amateur football club of Ukraine.
“We cherish the eternal memory of this hero,” said Karpaty Lviv after Sapylo was reportedly killed in the war.

Amidst the ongoing war among the two nations, former Ukraine footballer and legend Andriy Shevchenko called out for peace amongst the two countries. Ahead of the mega Milan derby aka Derby della Madonnina, Shevchenko said, “Dear Italian friends, I ask you from San Siro to give your support for peace in Ukraine. The Ukrainian people want peace, because peace has no borders, because what unites us must be stronger than what divides us. Let us stop this war together. I embrace you all.”
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine saw worldwide protest from different nations as they called out for peace. Both UEFA and FIFA have suspended the different Russian teams from participating in their respective competitions.
