RCB New Captain: What is taking RCB so long?
While both Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell both have captaincy experience, RCB team management put their weight behind the Australian over the South African. But then it emerged that Australia won’t be releasing players until April 6 due to the Pakistan tour, meaning RCB will be without their captain for the first two games if Maxwell were to be named the captain. Du Plessis then emerged as the strong contender.
But the team management also discussed Dinesh Karthik’s name. He played for RCB in 2015 and has led KKR in the past. However, InsideSport understands that Faf du Plessis will be named the new captain this week.
“Look, we have plenty of options and all are very able captains. Dinesh knows Kohli and RCB well. Maxy has been with us for a year now and Faf was a fantastic leader of South Africa. But we have to decide who is best for us,” the RCB source said.

With Virat Kohli stepping down, RCB have three options in Glenn Maxwell, Faf du Plessis and Dinesh Karthik. But Maxwell is the only player who have spent at least a year with RCB and has Kohli’s trust.
- The team management wanted to wait for the full IPL schedule and Australia’s squad announcement for Pakistan tour.
- Maxwell is not part of Australia’s white-ball tour.
- But Cricket Australia has granted NOC to players from April 6.
- That means Maxwell will miss out on at least first two games as he will not be eligible to play before April 6.
- Faf du Plessis and Dinesh Karthik will be available for the entire duration.
- But Faf du Plessis is being seen as a preferred option as the team doesn’t want to burden Maxwell with the captaincy role.
