IPL 2022: Boycott Chennai Super Kings trends on Twitter – Chennai Super Kings are one of the most popular IPL franchises with its captain MS Dhoni loved by millions not just in Tamil Nadu but all over India and world. However, a day after the auctions, #Boycott_ChennaiSuperKings was trending on Twitter with over 30,000 retweets. The reason? CSK fans were not happy with auction pick of Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana. Follow IPL 2022 Live Updates on InsideSport.IN.
“Remove the player from the franchise or Remove the word “Chennai” from your franchise name. If you feel this boy is more important for you than the emotions of Tamils, you don’t need to represent Chennai in IPL. @ChennaiIPL #Boycott_ChennaiSuperKings,” one of the fans tweeted.
Don’t try to normalise Tamil Genocide in Sri Lanka. Remove this Sinhalese player from CSK team. #DontNormaliseTamilGenocide#Boycott_ChennaiSuperKings pic.twitter.com/FbylNYSGVQ

In stark contrast, last month, Tamil Nadu CM ML Stalin felicitated MS Dhoni and the entire Chennai Super Kings team for winning the IPL title for the fourth time. Furthermore, MS Dhoni, despite not belonging to the state, has been a popular figure with fans decorating and painting houses after him.

Why do fans want to boycott CSK? – There is a long-standing tension between Tamilians and Sinhalese and in the past, there had been protests over including Muttiah Muralitharan in the squad. This time, it is over Maheesh Theekshana, who is of Sinhalese descent. The Sri Lankan off-spinner was picked up by CSK for Rs 70 lakh in Sunday’s auction. Theekshana is a corporal in the Sri Lankan army.

During Sri Lanka’s civil war that lasted for 26 years, Sinhalese soldiers were accused of war crimes against Sri Lankan Tamilians that led to the formation of LTTE (pro-Tamil organisation) which has been dubbed as a terrorist organisation by the government of India and the United Nations.
Sinhalese soldiers are accused of having committed war crimes against Tamilians in Sri Lanka during the military action against LTTE in 2009.

Is the Boycott CSK campaign first time? – No, it is not. In 2013, the IPL Governing Council banned Sri Lankan players from playing in Chennai due to intense political protests in the state and support from then CM Jayalalitha. In 2013, there were two Sri Lankan players in the CSK squad.
However, since 2014, CSK always avoided picking Sri Lankan players until IPL 2022 Auctions. The addition of Maheesh Theekshana creates a problem for the franchise once again. It is not yet known whether CSK will ask for a replacement while there has been no statement from the government yet. Furthermore, CSK will not play any IPL matches in Chennai this time as the IPL 2022 will be held in Maharashtra and playoffs are likely to be in Ahmedabad.
