Kolkata Knight Riders made headlines with their intent after they brought back Australian Test captain Pat Cummins for 7.25 crore in the auction. Cummins was one of the leading picks in the marquee set especially with his leadership abilities and while he did miss the IPL 2021 Phase 2, KKR backed him to deliver the goods and signed him back.

KKR also gave away a hefty sum of their purse on Shreyas Iyer, who could potentially be the new KKR skipper. Iyer, who previously led Delhi to the final, was bought for Rs 12.25 Crore, after a fierce bidding war. Kolkata then went ahead and signed Nitish Rana for 8 crore, severely depleting their budget.

Having let go a lot of Indian pacers due to budget, KKR then strained their purse to bring back Shivam Mavi, who bagged a stunning Rs 7.25 crore. The two-time champions also added Sheldon Jackson to their team, and have a lot of work to do to get their balance right.

KKR will be desperate to sort their first-choice wicketkeeper, with the likes of Devon Conway, Ben McDermott, Sam Billings, Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips all available. They would also want to beef up their squad and have backups to their overseas trio, especially considering their injuries and availability issues.

In Shreyas Iyer and Rana, KKR have their batting main stays with Russell, Narine and Venkatesh Iyer providing the fireworks with both bat and ball. Cummins and Mavi will join Varun Chakravarthy in forming the bowling attack, in what appears to be a well rounded XI, should KKR be able to plug their gaps.
